Five Valleys appoints new lift contractor to resolve accessibility issues

24 April 2023

Five Valleys shopping centre continues with its transformation bringing a number of new stores and services to Stroud.

Since undergoing its extensive refurbishment by South Yorkshire developers, Dransfield Properties, the lift serving all levels of the centre has been subjected to repeated vandalism making accessibility around Five Valleys challenging for some customers.

Despite an investment of over £120k and best efforts to source parts and get the repairs made quickly, the lift being out of service has been met with frustration by both management and shoppers.

Taking action to avoid future periods where this lift is out of action, the centre has now appointed new contractors Orona to oversee repairs and maintenance. The centre has also gone one step further by investing another £80k into a second lift, which is currently being designed and will be installed later this summer.

Repairs to the current lift are to be completed by the end of May and additional CCTV has been fitted to deter future acts of vandalism.

Head of Facilities for Dransfield Properties, Craig Bromley, said: “We have been subjected to a series of pre-mediated acts of vandalism on our centre lift causing our shoppers a great deal of difficulty and frustration, which we have shared.

“It is disappointing that a small group within the local community can be so destructive when such great efforts and investment are being made to the centre. We know how much impact this has on our shoppers and visitors.

“We want our shoppers to know that we fully recognise this as a major issue and our company is certain that with the steps planned we will be able to avoid this level of disruption in the future.”

Orona were selected as the chosen contractor due to their company values, promising to be proactive and react quickly to issues. They are also proud to be the first company in the sector to obtain the ISO 14006 Eco-design certificate and as a result have reduced their electricity consumption by 75%.

Scott Thurston From Orona said: “Orona are grateful for the opportunity to assist Five Valleys and are now well versed in the challenges presented to the team on a daily basis. We will form a working partnership to overcome these challenges and assist the centre with reducing the disruption to the local community.”
