Three-Cheese Mac and Cheese

  • 1 lb elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  6. Cook the sauce, whisking constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, shredded Gruyere cheese, and shredded Parmesan cheese until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  8. Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine.
  9. Transfer the mac and cheese to a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  10. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the mac and cheese.
  11. Bake the mac and cheese for 20-25 minutes, or until the breadcrumbs are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
