Five Valleys Market installing cutting edge new heating and cooling system using local expertise

4 August 2025

Shoppers and traders at the Five Valleys shopping centre in Stroud will soon enjoy a more comfortable experience all year-round, thanks to the installation of a brand-new, state of the art heating and cooling system.

Local Gloucestershire company Neptune Building Services has begun installing nine cutting-edge VRF (Variable Refrigeration Flow) air-conditioning units in the central area.

This advanced system will help keep the centre’s market and food hall area cool in summer and warm in winter, offering improved comfort for both visitors and traders — and doing so with a significantly reduced environmental impact.

The new system uses energy efficient technology - as a VRF system, it delivers efficient controlled heating and cooling. This makes it a safer and more sustainable solution that supports lower carbon emissions and better air quality.

The installation is now underway and due to be completed later in the month.  The  sustainable technology marks a key step in Five Valleys’ ongoing programme of improvements in recent months - aimed at enhancing the shopping experience and reducing the centre’s carbon footprint.

Erica Malpass, Centre Manager at Five Valleys, said: “Our market is a great asset here in Stroud but we want to make it a more comfortable environment for everyone when we have those extremes of weather. We are really thrilled to be working with a fantastic local company like Neptune on this important upgrade.”

Charlie Timms  Construction Manager at Dransfield Properties, the company which owns Five Valleys, added: “The new system will make a real difference to the environment inside the market, helping to keep it comfortable all year round for the centre’s traders and visitors.

“We’ve implemented a number of keys changes and improvements in the food hall in recent months and across the centre and we’re really pleased to be making this further investment.”

Kevin O’Durny, Air Conditioning Manager, from Neptune Building Services added: “It is great to be involved in delivering a sustainable solution right here in Gloucestershire and to be working with the Five Valleys team. This is a brilliant way to cut emissions and energy costs, and we are proud to see Five Valleys leading the way with this installation.”

This latest upgrade is part of a series of developments at Five Valleys during 2025, reinforcing its position as a vibrant and welcoming destination at the heart of Stroud.
